Lighting the Torch !

Congratulations to Josh Marshall who had the honour of being selected to carry the Olympic Torch. Josh stated that, "The experience was an amazing, once in a life time chance. To hear the crowd of screaming and waving school children sends a huge rush through you, especially when you’re the person everyone has come out to see. Carrying the Olympic torch was an experience I will never forget."

Our school's environmental group, Gaia, of Ascension Collegiate, Bay Roberts, have entered an online competition proposing an idea that, if successful, will award us dollars to purchase an outdoor green gym for our student / community garden. People across the country are voting for the idea of their choice, in various categories. Please help us win by voting for us! Click on the Gaia graphic above or the link below to view our idea and to register. Once you have entered your name and created a password, scroll down to click ‘register’ at the page bottom and then vote. You are permitted to vote once a day, so if you can think to include voting as part of your daily activities for the next two weeks, that would be great! Please forward this information on to your friends and family, encouraging them, too, to help us receive one of these awards. Aviva Insurance is granting a number of awards, totaling $500 thousand. We hope to receive $12 500. Thank you.

We so appreciate your help!!

Ascension Girls take Provincial Silver Medal !

The Ascension Astros Girls' soccer team were recent silver medal winners at their first ever Provincial tournament in Torbay the weekend of Oct 16-18! The team defeated Carbonear Collegiate in Regional competition to advance to provincials.

In round -robin play, the Astros lost to Holy Trinity, Torbay in a closely-contested game, 3-2. Their second game saw them prevail over Gander Collegiate in a 4-2 score. In an unusual twist, Saturday's games were not actually played, because of the sodden condition of the field, the referee instead going with decisions based on goal shootouts. In their third game, Ascension came out ahead of defending champion Menihek high, Labrador City, 2-0. In the crossover, the score was 4-2 in favor of Ascension against Stephenville High, again in a goal shootout. The championship game was played on Sunday morning in cool, wet conditions. The Ascension girls gave their best effort, losing in a close 2-0 game to Menihek. Goaltendeing was outstanding; Caitlin Vokey and Katie Harringtom sharing play.

Goal scorers for Ascension were: Kelsey Smith-4 goals
Andrea Neil-2
Hilary Mercer-2
Kendra Nippard-1
Jessica Wheaton-1
Carly Norman-1
April Yetman-1

Special recognition goes to Katie Harrington, who was awarded the" Sportmanship Award" for her team by the tournament committee. Thanks also to coaches Lisa Penney, Trudy Pike, team manager Maureen Robinson and chaperone Anna Norman.
