Hi Tech-History

Another successful year thanks to the Seniors Resource Center, the Seniors and all of our student volunteers !!!!!!

We're #1

On May 4th, 2013, the Ascension Collegiate Astros Cheerleading Team competed in the NLCA Provincial Competition at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay. The team competed in Level 3 of the Senior High Division and won first place! This is currently the highest division in which high school teams compete. Congratulations to all team members and their coaches; their performance was absolutely phenomenal!

Going into the second round, the Astros were trailing behind St. Kevin’s by a mere 1.25 points. St. Kevin’s had a score of 138.75, while the Astros had 137.5. Coach Kerilynn Mercer adds, "The girls knew they had a routine worthy of first-place, so they pulled up their socks and proved they deserved to win. Their second run-through was astonishing and virtually flawless; allowing the girls to come out on top!"

As their name was announced as the first place winners, Carolyn Power from NLCA noted that “these girls have been waiting for this for years”. Everyone knew for the past several years the team had been fighting for first place, losing out by a heart-wrenching few points each time.

These girls worked extremely hard, and they have spent the entire school year training and practicing for this competition. They have spent every day together putting last minute touches on the routine – and it certainly showed!

The coaches of the team are: Kerilynn Mercer, Jennifer Roach, Brittany Boone, and Brianna Hynes. Kerilynn and Jennifer dedicate their time as Teacher Sponsors for the team as well. All team members and coaches would like to thank all the teachers, parents, family members, students, and anyone else who helped make this year such a success. The support is greatly appreciated!

The captain for the 2012-2013 school year is Danielle St. Croix. Danielle was awarded with a $1000 NLCA Scholarship for her outstanding leadership qualities and academic achievements. The team MVP was awarded to Rachel Petten, who is a level two student as Ascension. This team certainly has a lot to be proud of; what a great way to end the year!

On Monday, April 29, the Ascension Collegiate Concert Band travelled to St. John's to participate in the Rotary Music Festival. The students performed well and were excellent ambassadors for the school. The concert band worked with clinicians Alain Cazes, a professor at McGill University and Dr. Gerry King, Director of the School of Music, University of Victoria. Congratulations to Katie Cranford and Victoria Smith who were both awarded the Rotary Honors award for their contribution to the Concert Band.

Congratulations Michael !

Michael attended Shad Valley in Dalhousie University for the month of July. He had an amazing experience which he will carry with him throughout his future. His team of approximately 10 students placed first for their work and will be attending the nationals at the University of Waterloo in late September. His Team completed amazing work and hopefully they will do excellent nationally. What Michael has achieved is a great example of how well students do at Ascension Collegiate and especially so if they win the National Shad Valley Entrepreneurship Cup.
