Congratulations to the Astros Cheerleaders! The girls brought home Silver medals after competing in Level 3 at the NL Cheerleading Provincial Competition held on Saturday, May 24th. Fans say the Astros pulled off an amazing performance filled with high difficulty skills and enthusiasm. Ms. Jennifer Roach was also awarded Coach of the Year for Newfoundland &Labrador Cheerleading Athletics. Way to go, girls!

Congratulations to Brandon Mertes on receiving certificate of excellence for his performance in the Michael Smith Science Challenge, from the University of British Columbia. The challenge is written by grade 10 students across the whole country, and Brandon was one of only 3 students in NL to place in the top 25%.

Nathaniel Well won First place in Knight's of Columbus Speak-Off  March 23 - he is going to the Provincials in Gander. 


Congratulations to Leah Clarke and Nathaniel Wells who participated in the Lions District Speak-Off's. Leah placed third in March and Nathaniel placed first in February.

The Modern Languages Department held its annual Concours d'art oratoire (French Speak-off) on Tuesday, March 18. The students did a great job! Participants from left to right are: Courtney Petten, Rebecca Power, Olivia Bradbury, Rachel Petten, Carla Bartlett and Michaela Drover. Olivia Bradbury, Michaela Drover, Rachel Petten and Courtney Petten will represent Ascension in their respective categories at the regional speak-off in April. Bonne chance les filles!!


Congratulations to the Ascension Collegiate Table Tennis Team on winning the regional qualification tournament at Roncalli Central High on Friday, February 7. All of the players represented the school very well and play extremely well. The team will play in the provincial tournament on Pilley's Island on February 22. Go Astros!!


Congratulations to Matthew French on winning the Gerald G. Hatch Scholarship.

Ascension Students and Staff bring in gifts for the Happy Tree.  The Salvation Army will collect the gifts which will be distributed to children in our area for Christmas. 

NL Winter Games, Here We Come

The Ascension Collegiate Male Volleyball team will be representing the Avalon Region at the Newfoundland and Labrador Winter games this coming March. Thanks to a 3-0 finish at the Regional playdowns, which were held on Monday, December 16th, the team can look forward to the opportunity to represent the region while participating in one of the province's most esteemed events. Congratulations Astros and best of luck at the Games! 

Ascension Collegiate hosted its Awards Ceremony on the evening of December 17th. The evening was a great success and as you can see the graduates of 2013 were elated! 


Ascension Collegiate Students & Staff donate $500 at the Trinity Conception Telethon. 


"With help from Colin Pottle and Mackenzie Dobbin, the cheerleaders show off their Astros pride at the Bay Roberts Santa Claus Parade on Saturday, December 7th" 


Ascension Collegiate honors Nelson Mandela with moment of silence by student body, "His message of forgiveness and hope will give confidence to peoples in the defence of just causes and universal rights".



Students and Staff of Ascension Collegiate donate $800 to the Red Cross to support Typhoon Relief in the Philippines. 


Nicole Kennedy and Vanessa  Jones attended "Let's Talk Science Conference: Empowering Women to Fuel the Future" in Gander on November 21-23, 2013. This conference explored the role of women in Science and Engineering as it related to the oil and gas industry and was sponsored by Hibernia and Memorial University. This was a great opportunity for students across the province to explore career interests in the science and engineering field. In the photo above Vanessa and Nicole and a multi-functioning robot from the Department of Engineering at MUN.

Promoting Physical Activity

The NLTA's Education Week and School Sports NL teamed up this year to promote physical activity in schools. Ascension's Healthy Living 1200 classes took this opportunity to partake in learning about Northern Games activities, including challenges such as leg wrestling, bench reach, stick pull and high kicks.  Students pushed themselves physically and discovered they had the ability to do a high kick over their own height and hop on foot for over four minutes.

Visiting Castle Hill

On Thursday, September 19 the French 3201 and Franšais 1202 students and their teachers, Madame Shortall and Madame Lawrence, travelled to Plaisance (Placentia), the former French capital of Newfoundland. Their first stop was at St. Anne's Academy in Dunville where they viewed the school's mural which depicts the history of the Placentia area. While in Placentia the group visited Castle Hill National Historic site, the archeological site, the O'Reilly House and St. Luke's church.

The information gathered from this planning process will assist the Eastern School Board establish its strategic direction, goals and objectives for continuous improvement of the Eastern School District over the next three years.
