Education
The first school was established in 1823 by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, a missionary society from England. They had 92 pupils. This school existed until 1839 when the Newfoundland School Society built a school at Cooper Head. The school was forty-five feet long and twenty-one feet across.
Forty-four Roman Catholic children in this town refused to attend this school. It was too far for these student to travel to Harbour Grace, a school was built for them in 1842 near Spoon Cove.
