The Fairies

Many people, not only in Upper Island Cove believe that there are fairies. There are many stories about young boys who were kidnapped by the fairies.

Two women from Upper Island Cove went berry picking one afternoon about ten minutes from their house. They had only planned to be gone long enough to pick a dipper full of berries, to make jam. They were gone a very long time and their family got worried and went to look for them. They gave up after a few hours and waited a while when the two came home shaken and scared. They told their story how they must have been overtaken by the fairies. They said that they heard a voice calling out to them. They had followed the voice and thought that they had been walking for miles and miles. When they had realized where they were, they realized that they had been walking in circles, and that they were only a few minutes from their house. Later that night they heard a noise outside their back door. On the step were their dippers filled with berries. Earlier that day, they had told their families that they had not picked a single berry.

People believe that if you were picking berries or in the woods, alone or with a friend, close to nightfall, the fairies would appear and kidnap you. People think that the fairies will not harm you if you have your socks or underwear on inside out.
