Religion
There has always been only two major religions in Upper Island Cove; Anglican and Roman Catholic. The majority of the population (more than 90%), is Anglican . The remainder is Roman Catholic. The area now known as Upper Island Cove was made up from four separate communities; Upper Island Cove, Bread and Cheese Cove, Cooper Head and Spoon Cove. Cooper Head and Spoon Cove were mainly Roman Catholic, while Upper Island Cove and Bread and Cheese Cove were Anglican. Spoon Cove was eventually absorbed into Upper Island Cove. Both Anglican and Roman Catholic services were originally held in the school, which doubled as a church. When the Anglican church was built in the 1800's, the school served as the church for the Roman Catholics until 1969, when a church was then built for them.
