The Atlantic Canadian Table Tennis championships are going to be held here at our school on May 19th & 20th if you are interested in playing in this event please contact Mr. Paul Drover. Making the Connection !
Through a partnership initiative between Ascension Collegiate and the Baccalieu Trail Seniors Outreach Services, Seniors Resource Centre Spaniard's Bay Career Development students at Ascension Collegiate earned volunteer hours by helping seniors develop technology skills in a programme called "Making the Connection' . A wrap-up celebration and presentation of certificates was held with speeches by Ms. Beverley Clarke, Vice President, Eastern Health, Marie Ryan, Regional Coordinator, Baccalieu Trail Seniors Outreach Services, Neil Kearly, Principal, Ascension Collegiate and Sally Peddle, representing the Senior participants. DRAMA FESTIVAL 2012 HAPPY? The drama team on Saturday, March 10th participated in the Annual Drama Festival performing Marc Warren’s play, Happy? Matthew Sheppard, Kristen Peach and Devin Drover were the psychiatrists who provided the audience with the opportunity to delve into our own selves to see if we are truly happy. Martina Taylor, Zoe Wilkins, Amy Loveless, Doug Ackerman, Rebecca Sheppard, Jessie Fewer, Emily Vokey and Jill Barrett read monologues that provided insight into our personal life experiences. This cast won the following awards: Best Ensemble, Best Stage Production, Best Original Script, Judge's Choice Award, Best Actress (Jessica Fewer), Merit Awards (Zoe Wilkins and Martina Taylor). Congratulations. A special thank you is extended to Debbie Janes and Marc Warren for their help in making this play a success. It was a powerful performance by a talented group of students. Ascension Students Support 30 Hour Famine Fundraiser
Ascension Collegiate students raise $6000 for World Vision by doing the 30 hour Famine. 75 students stayed overnight at the school to help support each other and were rewarded for their efforts by having breakfast cooked by supervising teachers. Students of Ascension have raised over $35,000 for this worthwhile cause over the last seven years.
Astros Win Again !
Congratulation! To our school Table Tennis Team on winning the Regional Qualifying Tournament. Since that event they have gone on to compete at the Provincials where they finsihed in a three way tie for second place. To Adam Drover on winning the Gold Medal at the High School Provincial Table Tennis Championships recently held at Heritage Collegiate in Lethbridge. Adam went through the tournament undefeated and he currently holds the 3 Jr.Major Table Tennis titles in NL: The NTV Provincial Championship, The NLTTA NL Schools Title, SSNL Table Tennis Title and he is currently the #1 Jr. in NL according to the Canadian Table Tennis Association Rankings. Jan Lisiecki visits Ascension !
On November 16, the students of Ascention Collegiate were fortunate enough to have a workshop with Jan Lisiecki, a 16-year old piano virtuoso from Calgary, Alberta. Jan talked to students about the elements of music, how to interpret music and his practice routine in addition to performing several pieces. It is not everyday you have the opportunity to hear an internationally renowned performer! It was a great time and everyone learned a lot.
