The Identification of Minerals

.... The ability to identify minerals using the simplest of techniques is a necessity for the Earth scientist, especially those scientists working in the field. In this activity you will become familiar with the common physical properties of minerals and learn how to use these properties to identify minerals. In order to understand the origin, classification, and alteration of rocks, which are for the most part aggregates (mixtures) of minerals, you must first be able to identify the minerals that comprise them.
