Astros take first place at the Provincials !

On October 14-16 th , the Ascension Collegiate Astros competed in the 3A Provincial Soccer Championships hosted by the Gander Collegiate Concordes. We are excited to announce that the Astros were successful in clenching the 3A banner. The Astros competed against 5 other teams, who all competed and won their respective regional title and the honor to compete at the Provincial tourney.

This is a huge accomplishment for our school and community as this is the first time that Ascension has won a Provincial title in soccer. Last year, the team competed in the Provincial tourney and finished second to the Menihek high school team. With 12 of 18 members returning from last season, the Astros started the tourney strong with a win against the host team, defeating the Concordes by a score of 4 – 1.

In the second game the Astro girls were defeated by Mobile high school by a score of 5 – 1. After battling hard for the first half and keeping Monarchs to a 1 goal lead, the Astros were outplayed by the Monarchs in the second half.

On Saturday morning, in torrential rain and high winds, the Astros played in the semi-finals against the Stephenville Spartans. In 90 minutes of play, the score remained 0 – 0 and the match was forced into overtime. After another 20 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless and the match was sent to a shoot out. The Astros emerged victorious as Katie Harrington, Jaya Pham and Kelsey Smith netted goals while Chelsee Bradbury stopped 3 out of 5 shots from the Spartans. Other g oal scorers for the weekend were Kathryn Mercer and Jenna Pham.

Later that afternoon, the Astros lined up once again against the Mobile Monarchs, who had eased past Mealy Mountain (Labrador) in the second semi-final. After 40 minutes of play, the Astros were ahead by a score of 2 – 1 by goals from Kelsey Smith. In the second half the girls out worked the Monarchs and netted 2 more goals and defeated the Monarchs 4 – 2. Coach Lisa Penney said “I knew the girls could compete with this team; they just needed to play their game, and they did!”

“Goal tender Chelsee Bradbury played a phenomenal tournament but was outstanding in the final game” said coach Mary Ann Sheehan. “ The girls made everyone so proud! All their hard work and spirit certainly paid off. A huge thanks to the parents for being there - the girls played hard because of that too” added coach Trudy Pike.

The team would like to extend our appreciation to coach Trudy Pike for her exceptional leadership both on and off the field and for her commitment to the sport of soccer in our community and our school. Coach Pike volunteered countless hours of her personal time to work with the team and further their knowledge and skills of the game.

The coaches and team would also like to thank teachers, parents, students and members of the community for their support this season.

Members of the 3A Provincial Championship team are: Holley Bartlett, Chelsee Bradbury, Kristen Coombs, Emily Crummey, Teri Delaney, Kristen Downey, Katie Harrington, Shara Hodder, Hilary Mercer, Kathryn Mercer, Kelly Mercer, Andrea Neil (captain), Carly Norman, Jaya Pham, Jenna Pham, Chelsea Porter, Jessica Wheaton, and tournament MVP and Sportsmanship winner Kelsey Smith (captain), coaches Lisa Penney, Mary Ann Sheehan, and Trudy Pike.

“It is indeed a victory that the girls, the coaches and parents will cherish forever” Trudy Pike.
