Spotlight On Our Students

                                  Ascension to Athenry

During the summer of 05-06 students in our music program traveled to Ireland. Everyone had a great time learning about the Emerald Isle.

Congratulations ! To our Cross Country Team on a good showing at the Fourth Annual CBN Harvest Run Cross Country Meet in Carbonear this past weekend. Andrew Parsons, Courtney Sparkes, and Lisa Dickson placed first in their events. The following students also performed at a high level Robyn Kennedy(2nd), Peggy Lee Butler(3rd), Todd Lynch(3rd), Stephanie Lundrigan, Claire Turpin, Natasha George, Matthew Smith(3rd) Matthew Wescott, Keith Russell, Andrew Harrington, and Stefan Sparkes

Congratulations! To our school Math Team on winning the first math competition of the year for the Avalon West Region. Members of the team include: Mr. Tony Mercer(Coach), Matthew Drover, Emily Morgan ,Cody Mercer , and Jonathan Neil.

Congratulations ! To Hayward Butler on winning two awards this past weekend at the 8th Annual Youth Ventures Awards held in Stephenville. Hayward won the award Venture of the year ($1000) and the award Excellence in Financial Management ($500). He won the awards for his business Hayward's Yardworks. Hayward also won a gold medal last year at the Canadian Skills Competition held in Edmonton, Alberta.

Astros Win Provincial Banner !

 

The Ascension Collegiate Astros Senior Boys Cross Country Running Team won Ascensions’ first ever provincial running banner on the weekend of Nov. 4th & 5th. The meet was hosted by Viking Trail Academy in Plum Point. The team and their placements in brackets, consisted of Matthew Wakeham(5th), Matthew Smith(8th), Matthew Westcott(11th), Andrew Parsons(13th), and Keith Russell(17th) advanced to the provincial meet by winning the Avalon/St. John’s regional championship held in Carbonear on Oct. 22nd. In cross country running a team consists of five runners with the first four crossing the finish line in the 5 km race, counting for the teams points. Their placement in the race equals the number of points they receive and the school with the lowest total of points from their first four runners wins the race. Ascension was the only team to have all 5 runners in the field of 50, finish in the top twenty. Complete team results below:

Ascension Girls take Gold in first ever

This year, Ascension Collegiate hosted the first ever Astrofest Hockey Tournament combining a male and female division of teams from around the province. In the male division, teams competed for the 15th Annual Wesley Gosse Shield while the females fought for the Walsh Shield. The Ascension girls completed round-robin play undefeated and took gold in the championship beating Holy Heart of St. John’s by a score of 4-2. The girls look forward to a good showing in the upcoming Confederation Cup in the new year as well as competing in regional play with an eye towards Provincials in March. Our Boys team also played well but where eliminated in the crossovers.

Astros Girls Take Provincial Gold!

The Provincial Girls High School Hockey Championships were held in Bonavista from March 23 - 25th. Eight teams took part in the round robin tournament with the Ascension Team going undefeated through the tournament. Ascension defeated Roncalli Central High, Port Saunders, the defending Champs, 11 - 7 in the semi finals and Fogo Island Central Academy 6 - 4 in the Championship Game. A game that saw the Astros behind by a score of 4 -3 after two periods of play. Erin Earle led the Astros attack with 4 goals, Peggy Wakeham scored 2 with Nancy Saunders adding 1 goal which turned out to be the game winner. Nancy Saunders was also named the winner of the Team Sportsmanship Award. Team coaches were Mr.’s Mark Shortall, Keith Mercer and Ernie Walsh.

Skills Canada Team Champs Again !

Friday, March 24th, saw Ascension Collegiate students travel to St. John’s to compete in the Annual Canadian Skills competition sponsored by Skills Canada. Over 200 students competed in competitions in a variety of skilled trades and technologies such as Autobody Repair, Baking, Computer Animation, Robotics, IT Support and Speech. Hayward Butler took home Gold in the Job Skills category while Jonathan Neil received a Gold in the IT Software Application category. The Robotics Team, consisting of Leanne Brockerville, Jordan Smith, Clarke Fowler and Bradley Power took home a Silver Medal. The team was coached by Mr. Dave Keefe. Jillian Bishop and Shelly Sharpe took home Silver 3D Computer Animation. Kelly Lawlor took home a Bronze Medal in Worksite Safety while Adam Lynch also took home a Bronze Medal in Prepared Speech. The Medal Wins totaled with the points gained by other team members resulted in the Ascension Team taking home the Provincial Skills Banner for the 2nd year in a row. Gold Medal winners will now travel to represent the province at the National Skills Competition to be held in Halifax at the end of May while other team members are eligible to also travel to Halifax to view the competition. Besides Mr. D. Keefe, the other teacher coaches / sponsors of the Team were Mr.’s Paul Gosse, Dave Trainor, Mark Shortall , Paul Drover and Ms. Maureen Robinson.

Ascension Collegiate takes Gold at Provincial Winter Games in Deer Lake

Ascension Collegiate represented the Avalon Region in Girls Volleyball at the Provincial Winters recently held in Deer Lake. The girls went undefeated through the tournament. In the semi finals the girls defeated the Eastern Region team while in the Gold Medal game they defeated the Central Region representatives 2 - 0 to take the Gold Medal. The girls coach was Derek March. Michelle March was team Manager while Lisa Doucette was teacher chaperon.

Silver Medals at Provincial Fair Play Basketball Tournaments

Our Senior Boys Basketball Team participated in the Provincial Tournament held in Clarenville. They advanced to the Championship Game but lost out to Clarenville High School Cougars 77 - 64. Jamie Tobin led the Astros with 16 points. The Astros had went undefeated up to that point. They had won their 3 round robin games and had defeated Mobile High School 57 - 37 in the semi finals. Shane Seymour led the Astros attack in the semi final game with 15 points. Overall, the team was awarded the Sportsmanship Banner for School & Tournament Spirit. Andrew Harrington won the team's individual Sportsmanship Award. The team coaches were Mr. JK Flynn & Mr. Marc Warren. In the Girls Provincial Fair Play Tournament, our girls also went through the round robin 3-0. They, in turn, lost in the championship game to St. Kevins' of St.John's. Jessica Roberts was named the winner of the Sportsmanship Award for the Astros. The team coaches were Ms. J. NcNeil and Mr. D. Trainor.

 

Knights of Columbus Regional Speak off!

Daisy Dawe, representing Ascension, placed first on Sunday, March 26, at the Regional Knights of Columbus Speak Off held in Harbour Grace. Daisy, one of six speakers, spoke on “ Gambling” . Daisy now represents our region at the Provincial Knights of Columbus Speak Off in Gander during the month of April. Ms. Yvette Morgan was Daisy's teacher / coach.

Cheerleaders take part in Cheer Expo in Halifa x

After lots of practice, and a lot of fund-raising, 28 cheerleaders from our school participated in the Annual Cheer Expo held in Halifax , Nova Scotia , the weekend of March 25 - 26. The girls were accompanied by team coach Ms. Carolyn Power & chaperone, Mr. Dave Bishop. Despite having some boat troubles the team had a GREAT experience which will certainly add to their Astro memories.

Math Team on the Way to the Provincials!

Our Math Team is also on its way to the Provincial Math Competition after placing 2nd in the Avalon West Region. The team, consisting of Matthew Drover, Emily Morgan, Cody Mercer, Clarie Turpin, and Jonathan Neil coached by Mr. Tony Mercer will travel to St. John's to compete in the Provincial Championship in April.

Ascension 13th Annual Auction A Total Success

On Saturday, March 18, we held our 13th Annual Auction. Each year the Auction raises a considerable amount of funds which adds to the pursuit of educational excellence at the school. The money raised from this event goes directly to help fulfill the needs of our students. Past Auctions have generated funds that have purchased items such as keyboards for the Music Program, exercise equipment for the Physical Education Program, computers & computer equipment for the Technology Program and the list can go on and on. Dr. Calvin Powell, the Auction Chairperson, thanked everyone involved “for their involvement in making the auction, the success it was this year and in past years. An event of this magnitude requires a lot of unselfish dedication from committee members, students, teachers, parents and donors. Your commitment is indeed commendable and much appreciated by both students and staff ”, Dr. Powell stated. This year the school realized in excess of $20,000 which will be used to purchase a variety of resources for the school and its students.

Ascension Collegiate releases its 2nd Music CD

St. Patrick's Day, March 17th, was even more special this year for our music students, staff and parents as we officially released our 2nd CD titled “Ascension to Athenry”. The CD, features traditional Newfoundland and Irish music and an original track entitled “The Legend of the Island Cove Fairies”. It was released on CHVO 560 radio as an hour long show. CHVO played the entire CD along with interviews with students, Principal Mr. Philip Wood and co-producer of the CD, Mr. Ian Crewe.

The CD idea was conceived and co- produced by Heather McDonald, Ascension's music teacher for the past five years, who tragically passed away suddenly in December 05. The Ascension music program under Ms. McDonald's leadership also released a CD titled, “Ascension Presents”, in December 04. This CD featured a collection of Christmas Music.

The CD precedes a trip to Ireland in the summer of 06 for a group of the students and their teachers as they explore the roots of many of the students and the music and culture of Ireland.

Boys Ice Hockey Team Wins Regionals / Advance to Provincials

Ascension Collegiate Astros recently won the Regional 4A Ice Hockey Championship. The Astros went through the 5 team tournament undefeated .On the weekend of March 30th– April 1st the boys hockey team competed in the Provincial 4A Tournament in Grand Falls. They advanced to the championship game after going through the tournament with a record of three wins and a tie. In the championship game they lost a thriller 4-3 in overtime to take the silver medal. Cody Roach took sportsmanship honors for the team. Team coaches were Mr's. P. Gosse, R.
