This years Mole Day Theme was Mole
Madness. At 6:02 am students raised the flag and
then had breakfast. This was followed by games with a chemistry
link, like "Moleleopardy".

Awards

Congratulations to Robin Kennedy
and Sheldon Fry on receiving the Silver Duke of Edinburgd Award.
Also to Ms. Agnes Allen on receiving an award for five years of
service. Awards were presented by Premier Danny Williams.

Girl's Hockey Team takes Gold !

For the second straight year our girls hockey
team competed in the Astrofest Invitational High School Hockey
Tournament held at the Bay Arena and once again walked away with
the Gold. As was the case last year our girls went undefeated in
tournament play. Team members for the

GAIA Receives Provincial Recognition
The Ascension Collegiate GAIA group recently received their 4th
Ocean Net award while attending the Youth Ocean Net Conference
at the Marine Institute in St. John’s. The award, titled
Eco-Champs, consisted of a plaque and a $500 cash award. The
award was received for the beach cleanup work that GAIA has been
doing annually for the past 5 years on the Shearstown Estuary.
GAIA intends to put this cash award towards a naturalization
project to do up the school grounds. Members of GAIA include and
teacher sponsor Ms. Pat George.
Duke of Edinburgh Award Achievers
October 19th was a big day for two of our students and their
teacher as the Honourable Danny Williams presented them with
Awards of Achievement as part of the Young Canadian Challenge.
Sheldon Fry and Robyn Kennedy were both recognized as Silver
Award Achievers. Ms. Agnes Allen was also recognized as a Leader
of the program for her commitment and dedication for the past
five years. The Awards are well deserved and the entire school
community congratulates all three!!
Boys Soccer Team - On the Road
Our senior boys soccer team recently traveled to Doyles in
the Codroy Valley to participate in the Provincial 3A Soccer
Tournament. The boys went through the round robin with a 1 - 1
record and then advanced through to the cross overs where they
loss to the eventual winner John Burke of Grand Bank. Following
the Tournament our team was presented with the Tournament
Sportsmanship Award. Way to Go!!! The players and coaches, Mr.
Neal Kearley & Mr. Rod Barrett, are to be commended!
Provincial Softball Tournament
Ascension Collegiate was represented at the Provincial 4A
softball Tournament on the weekend of October 21st. The boys,
coached by Mrs. Dave and Andy Morrissey, Despite a good
tournament, the boys went through it winless. However, our
district was well represented by the ASTROS!!!
Clarenville Subway Classic - Silver
The weekend of October 20th saw our senior girls volleyball
team participate in the annual Clarenville Subway Volleyball
Classic. The Ascension girls were defending champs and went
through the round robin undefeated in series matches. In semi
final play they defeated Random Island which then put them in
the finals against Bishops College from St. John’s. Here our
girls lost 2 - 0 to take home a silver medal. Congratulations on
a great tournament to the girls and their coaches Mr.’s Glen
Lane and Derek March.
Astro Girls take 4A gold
!

The Ascension girls volleyball team experienced great success in
all tournaments played on the island this fall. The team,
coached by Mr. Derrick March and Mr. Glen Lane, took home gold
in three of the four tournaments played.
One tournament the girls were victorious in winning was the
prestigious Volleyfest tournament where they took home the gold
and a banner to display in the school.
Corner Brook High School played host to the 4A provincial
volleyball championships on December 8th - 9th, 2006. The
Ascension team was undefeated in round robin play and beat the
host team in the semi-final match to advance to the championship
match where they would again battle the Bishops College Baron
for the provincial title. For the third time this fall a
dominant Ascension team overpowered the team from St. John’s,
defeating them in two straight games to capture the most highly
recognized volleyball title, the Newfoundland and Labrador
provincial high school volleyball championship. This is the
first 4A provincial volleyball championship for an Ascension
Collegiate girls team in Twenty years.

Astro Boys Hockey Team in Ontario
This past week, the Ascension Astros boys hockey team traveled to Toronto to compete in the annual Continental Classic hockey tournament. The team played five games against Ontario teams in just two days and finished with a Silver metal. The team won 4 games and lost only once, a 5-1 loss to the eventual champs out scoring the opposition by a 38-12 margin. Off ice the team spent time at the widely acclaimed “ Gretzky’s Restaurant,” and also visited the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Ascension Collegiate Astros
Female Hockey Team won the 9th Annual Confederation Cup this
past weekend in St. John’s. The team defeated Holy Heart in
the championship game by a score of 5-1. This year saw a record
18 female teams competing in the tournament. With this win the
team finishes their season with a perfect 18-0 record after
winning the High School Provincial’s earlier this month in
Springdale. The girls look forward to getting back on the ice
next fall and wish our five level lll’s all the best next
year... we know you will continue in your successful ways in
whatever your future holds..... Way to Go!
Ascension Wins Top Place at
Skills Competition
Students
from Ascension Collegiate showcased their skills in the 10th
annual Skills Canada Competition held in St. John’s on March
30. From the 12 categories in the Skills Competition, students
from Ascension took home a total of 8 medals. As well, the
students earned their school the overall Top Place Standing in
the competition. This is the third year in a row that Ascension
Collegiate has achieved such an outstanding accomplishment.
